Operating failures in measuring, control, data and power lines are often the result of surge voltages on the line.
The surge voltage (also called transients) can be generated by switching of electrical equipment or by lightning discharges.
Depending on the specific application, protective measures for systems and devices can be broken down into:
- Primary protection,
- Intermediate protection
- Secondary protection
with the boundaries between these types of protection being variable.
